Love the hair man...

(Love the hair man)

27 October 2016: The Lakers today announced that they have acquired Iman Shumpert in exchange for Tyson Chandler.  To many, the dealing of arguably the franchise’s greatest ever player, (certainly the best ever big man) comes as a surprise.  After all, much has been written about how Chandler essentially acted as the key defensive anchor which led this team to make history and haul in back-back to back NLL Titles over the past two seasons.  So here at the LA Times we take a closer look at this deal and attempt to try and break it down for fans.

Plumlee Rising:  Chandler helped to revolutionise the Center position with his excellent rebounding, screen setting and rim protection however it is not secret that since being drafted a couple of seasons ago the team has been grooming young big man Mason Plumlee as Tyson’s replacement.  With Tyson moving on and Mason coming into his prime years he will take over the reigns as the Lakers premier big man.

Management Loves Shumpert:  For the past two seasons Charlotte brass have often been approached as to what it would take to pry Iman Shumpert away.  Apart from his awesome hair-do, as a two-way, athletic, big guard Lakers management have been big fans of Iman’s gamestyle since he was a rookie.  So when the chance came to finally land him via a 3-way deal, it was too good an offer to pass up on.

Backcourt Depth:  So it seems that we have come to an end of era in Lakerland, with the big guy gone in Chandler.  However, with the addition of a younger, athletic wing the Lakers have bolstered their backcourt stocks heading into an uncertain free agency period where they may well lose two key players in Courtney Lee and Gerald Green.

Looking Forward:  gm greenmig has proven that he can be successful in multiple eras, winning 3 NLL Titles to date.  This is only accomplished by constantly looking forward and staying ahead of the curve.  Whilst it is with a tinge of sadness that Chandler is no longer a Laker, with the NLL playstyle always evolving it is imperative that the team also evolves to take advantage of new developments.  As the league places more of a priority on multi-skilled players at all positions the Lakers will no doubt be looking to free agency to re-tool their roster along these lines.  So stay tuned.
