Thunder's Offseason Awakening

Rolling Thunder: 18/08/2016

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything out of Oklahoma, but we made a point of checking in with the team this week despite their offseason being pretty much like most of the past season, quiet.

With a deep, promising young roster of guys all under contract, or due for Restricted Free Agency, the need to act vigorously simply hasn’t been there in Oklahoma so the phones have remained pretty quiet. There’s been a fair amount of interest shown by other teams in a handful of the Thunder’s prospects, but management has been patient in looking for deals and deciding what way to go from here. Had they not had a couple of unexpected decisions to come to the NLL from two of their European stars, we could have just seen them make minor adjustments to sign their rookie drafts picks and that’s it. But now they have a new problem.

Here’s the roster outlook:

Under Contract:

Draymond Green – Starting PF.
Jimmy Butler – Starting SG.
Ricky Rubio – Starting PG.
Dennis Schroder – 6th man, reserve PG.
Nikola Jokic – 1st big off the bench.
Robert Covington – 6th man, bench gunner.
Josh Richardson – Reserve swingman.
Joffrey Lauvergne – 2nd big off the bench.
Walter Tavares – 12th man, Prospect.
Bruno Caboclo – Prospect.

Free Agents:

Jonas Valanciunas – RFA, will return. Starting C.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist – RFA, will return. Starting SF.
Evan Fournier – RFA, will return. 6th man, swingman.
Boban Marjanovic – RFA, likely to leave.
Damien Inglis – RFA, might have his Rights retained.

Draft Picks:

Juan Hernangomez – 23rd Pick, coming to the NLL.
Patrick McCaw – 31st Pick, coming to the NLL.
Isaia Cordinier – 34th Pick, staying in Europe.
Zhou Qi – 37th Pick, staying in China.

Draft Rights:

Tomas Satoransky – Coming to the NLL.
Alex Abrines – Coming to the NLL.
Vasilije Micic – Staying in Europe.
Louis Labeyrie – Staying in Europe.
Nikola Milutinov – Staying in Europe.
Nikola Radicevic – Staying in Europe.

For those playing at home, that tallies 13 players under contract or returning, 2 open roster spots, but 4 players required to be signed. Something has got to give. 2 roster spots will need to be created in order to satisfy their signing needs, and the most likely scenario sees the promising, but still developing Bruno Caboclo likely to be the first casualty of this scenario. There has been up to 5 teams asking after the young forward this summer already, so he’ll be playing elsewhere next season.

Who else is moved though? It would seem another swingman would be the likely scenario with a bunch of young talent on the roster at this position, and the returning MKG. Robert Covington’s name has popped up as he has arguably one of the best value contracts in the league at 2 years remaining, $1 million a year, and starting quality talent, but should a contending team be looking to rely on rookies next year ahead of a guy like Covington?

There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge, and the GM is only now starting to develop a “next move” plan, but you can imagine anything could happen right now if a prospective trade partner came to the table strong enough.
