Ohh Canada

On Wednesday, the Toronto Raptors announced the hire of their new GM, former GM of the Sacramento Kings, CarlSpackler.

When asked what it was about the Raptors that motivated him to come out of retirement, Spackler explained, "After my 'retirement', I took a year to collect my thoughts and recharge my batteries. Running the Kings was a blast and I was fortunate to have a team with an incredible amount of talent. But the Raptors will present an entirely new and very different challenge that has me really energized. I'm under no illusions that we're prepared to compete for a championship. We're not. Let's just be very clear about that. We're probably in for a pretty challenging year, but I'm committed to building a team that will eventually compete for a championship."

While that sort of candor may not have been entirely appreciated by the Raptors fans - and maybe not by the owners either - Spackler was clearly determined to not fall into the same trap he'd found himself in with the Kings. Having a team with so much talent, he ran the team with a win-now mentality, rather than building a team that was made for long-term success. And fortunately (or unfortunately), a win-now mentality is not a luxury this Toronto team can enjoy. That's obvious to the casual observer, but maybe not so much for a passionate fan-base. And though the comment might have been a bit disconcerting.

Toronto's team has an interesting combination of veterans and some promising young talent. But there are a lot of holes to fill, as well. So there will be plenty of moves to be made. "It's too soon for me to talk about the changes we might be making. I'm going to get to know the guys first, and find out who's committed to growing with this team and taking us to the next level. Not everyone's going to be up for it, but for those that are, it's going to be a fun ride."
