Power Ranking - Top to Bottom Analysis

Dec, 05 (Week 4) - With the league heating up and Q1 closing, team's have conjured up words such as ruthless, clinical, creative, adventurous and bold in some cases. The league has seen many interesting phases in a short space of time and the Power Rankings only serve to add further curiosity. Injuries have turned teams from world beaters and backseaters, causing headaches for GMs and a source of popcorn eating for others. Milwaukee stand on top. But with plenty to play for and surprises across the league the rankings reflect a league that has many teams jostling and fighting for each and every basket with an 'on-the-day' mantra seeming to develop for certain games. Power to the Players. [breece]

What can I say about Milwaukee that hasn't already been said about Milwaukee!? Even though they saw their first 2 loss stretch, they have been dominant in all areas and suffocated teams with their scoring ability with a +10.94 differential and welcome back the Greek Freak and CJ Miles into the starting 5. Sitting 5-0 in the division already, sees them sitting pretty on top. The beginning of the season has seen Giannis, Westbrook and Towns all average 20+ points over 32+ minutes. Amazing news for the Bucks - Shivers for the upcoming teams.

OKC have hit their straps and are taking all prisoners. The consistent point numbers of Paul George and Jimmy Butler has seen the Thunder break down teams in a two prong attack. The Thunder also welcome Kyle Korver into the side for extra fire power from outside, and can come off the bench to give further headaches. With the towering defensive efforts of Jokic and Green, and their talented supporting cast on the bench - the Thunder should continue to grind teams out.

While Cleveland have Teodosic and Ross out of the team - they saw a 4 win stretch during week 4. Impressively polishing off Sacremento, Golden State, Clippers and grinding out against Dallas. The top team for rebounds and assists per game, while 2nd in the league for points scored per game, 4th for steals, and 3rd for blocks - the Cavaliers have a game that is comprehensive and measured. The Cavs are seeing amazing production from their 3-5 spots with James, Ibaka and Drummond particularly. We can expect to see more of the same as the enter the week with likely wins over on the cards and an expected continuation in the numbers they have been producing.

The Triples keep falling in Chicago! The Windy City has seen an average of 13.8 triples a game! The splash brothers have been busy. But sadly for the Bulls they find themselves with Dedmon injured for 3-6 weeks with a left leg injury. Along with the suspended Joakim Noah, the Bulls will need to find a solution and get crafty and Looney finds himself as the number 1 centre. With three top-3 seeds in their Week 5 games, Chicago will need everything to go for them.

The run of the Magic continues to marvel much of the NLL, however much of their success and current form is now becoming more evident and measurable. Big Val, Markkanen and Matthews have annihilated teams at times purely through their smash-mouth style, post play and ruthless defense. Big Val himself - posting 24.2 PPG and 11.2 RPG, he has been relatively unstoppable. Along with the creative play of Goran Dragic, the Magic have a starting 5 that can rival and outplay many other 'star studded' lineups. The Magic have been blessed by an injury free lineup beyond young rookie Derrick White.

The Knicks turned things around in Week 4 - an opposite bookend to Week 1 as they went 3-1. Irving and Harden have gelled once again dishing out and dropping down. The duo managed averages of 31.0 and 22.0 PPG averages in Week 4, while 5.8 and 8.3 APG. The Knicks will still be without Bobby Portis, which persists as a integral out. With the Lakers, Bucks, Blazers and Wizards in their next 4 fixtures, they will be hoping to strike the right balance in their rotations and talented rotation squad.

Miami have continued to surprise the league in many ways - they have been graced by the consistency from outside. The Heat have knocked down nearly 40% of their 3's thus far. Redick has been their go-to, while Harris and Biyombo have continued to steadily supply dimes and boards. However, the Heat will need to rally with the loss of rookie star - Kyle Kuzma for the first time this year, but welcome back Timofey Mozgov. They enter the week - staring down firm contests, how will they fair? Are there more surprises to come?

Charlotte have providers all over the court! 7 players have posted 11+ PPG - a handy contribution from their roster. While Maker, Porzingis and Turner have made sure that the post is protected. A clean sweep of Week 4 seemed like light work for the Hornets as they go from stride to stride. Toronto, Utah, Washington and Chicago are up next, and they will hoping for a repeat. Giles and Jackson remain injured, however Charlotte have all the coverage they need at current.

The Laker Story for this season starts with one man - Nikola Vucevic. He has been a colossus for the Lakers, and has already notched up a Weekly award for his sublime performances. Not only have the contributions of Big Vuc been a suprise but also the supporting contributions of Jonathon Simmons. While they have a challenging next 5 fixtures in the week - LA remain the best stealing team in the league and in the top-5 for threes per game. One thing is always certain - the Lakers will find a way.

The Spurs are the leaders in Points and Rebounds. However they had a week to forget as they went 1-3 in Week 4. Embiid and Davis have continued to dominate both in buckets and boards - however they will find themselves with Embiid added to the IR list which includes Beverley and Conley. San Antonio will see themselves shape up against 2 of the lowest teams in the NLL during current standings in Toronto and Golden State. However to make matters worse they remain the league leader in TPG with 14.8 per game currently. A time for Spurs fans to herald the highs and loath the lows. Can the Spurs turn it around? I believe so.

The Celtics had a forgettable week - as they saw three losses after a stellar clean sweep in the previous week. The loss of KD was evident as the points from Iguodala (who has parted ways with the organisation for the Golden State Warriors) and Favors were lacking. An evident shift in approach has already occurred and GM JMac has his preferred starting 5 back in action to turn things around. Lopez/ O'Quinn/ Durant/ Evans/ Lowry. We should see a new and revitalized Celtics outfit, and a return to form.

Portland have continued to turn things around and GM Toby is brimming with confidence. Rudy Gay continues to be the jewel in the crown. Since arriving in the City of Roses he has torn up the court each and every game he has played with a 28.8 PPG. Producing numbers of 34,40,32,39 in last weeks games - he has been dominant for the Blazers and they couldn't be happier with his production. The issue then becomes - where else does it come from? During a game that saw Gay total 39 points - they suffered a 13 point loss to Denver. Can the Blazers supporting cast help out? They'll need to.

The Scars of 76 - no, that's not an upcoming mini-drama, that's the curious case of the Philadelphia 76ers. There is talent a-plenty in Philly - but without the dynamic duo of Gobert and Kawhi, they seemed lost and scarred. Lillard continues to play almost single-handed. What this team will be with a healthy list could be a scary prospect? Til then the 76ers remain 9th in the hotly contested East with a record of 8-9 - with an aim of tipping the wins up!

The one word on everyone's lips - BOBAN! The anomaly that is Boban Marjanovic has set the league and fan-pages bursting in Sacremento. Between his efforts and those of Melo, Okafor and Gasol the Kings have produced some quality play against challenging opposition. However with 2-2 in their past week and will enter the week without the services of Okafor. It will be tough-going for the team as they face up against Dallas, Toronto, Portland, Philly - all teams that are looking to change their records in a positive manner and recharge after Q1.

The rotating centre combination of Monroe and Sabonis has been an effective roster use by the Hawks during the opening weeks. They find themselves in the top 5 for the league in threes made (10.8 per game), and have the third lowest turnover average in the league at 10.1. However Atlanta still find themselves slugging it out at 10th in the East. With a stretch of games against the Cavs, OKC, the up and about Pistons, and surprise packet Miami, they will be needing to find sparks across the court and sadly must find it without Crabbe (out with a Back injury).

Houston has a problem - No Thomas, No Whiteside, No Chandler. It will be interesting to see how they shape up this Week. The Rockets had a productive week going 3-1. However this was with the help of the Big man Whiteside who was leading scorer with 34,28,23,35. It will be interesting to see how GM Vitticus manages the situation and Whiteside's void. Against stiff competition in the Lakers, Clippers, Suns and Nets, the secondary will need to raise their game to keep themselves in the mix.

After their week 3 stretch of losses they turned things around and showed what they can really do. The Nuggets found themselves on a 5 game win-streak, until being put to a halt against the Lakers. The positive has been the ability for each and every one of their starting five members taking the starring role - in the past 9 games they have had 4 different leading scorers. Sadly much of their success has been as a result of the dominance at the PG slot for John Wall - however Chalmers and Nelson are helpful options for the Nuggets in his absence.

The Utah Jazz welcome Trevor Ariza in and now shape up with Paul/Wiggins/Ariza/Aldridge/Gasol. Goosebumps appear just writing down the names - the Jazz have a supporting bench that can cause problems in the rotation as well with Cauley-Stein, Kilpatrick and new-recruit Patty Mills. With a less than impressive record the Jazz fans are in full voice now, and shock waves are sure to follow as Utah look to build and move their way up the West. Though Rose is out again, the Jazz GM merencio must be pleased as he now has an intimidating team coming into a brand-new week.

The Mavericks cannot catch a break - while they find themselves in the mix, they will be loathing the fact that their best starting five still has yet to find the court. However they still remain 8-9 and sitting 6th in the West. Noel remains in the top 5 for his rebounding and Lonzo in the top 5 for assists in the NLL averages. But they enter the week without the big man and must call upon the services of rookie Edrice Adebayo in the starting PF spot. Big shoes to fill and during a time when the Mavericks need to find a way to win, he will need to work in with Zubac (who has been consistent and reliable for Dallas). With fixtures against the Timbs, Kings, Pistons, Spurs and Nets it could be tough going for Dallas and a baptism for the youngster.

After a recent visit to New Orleans recently, the chants of Len, Len, Len, Alex, Alex, Alex (to the tune of Cup of Life by Ricky Martin) emanated with crystal-clear clarity from Bourbon Street. He has taken the town by storm and they love it, and has been a hot topic for many in the NLL. He has been up for nominations for Player of the Week as well, and presents as a genuine threat every game. He produced a 33.5 PPG and 12.5 RPG average in Week 4, but sadly it would also coincide with consecutive losses for the Pelicans. The Pelcians will be looking for the right mix and complementary play from the likes of Leaf, Parsons, Hill and Jackson. With no notable absences in the squad - it seems to be case of 'Which Pelicans will we see?" and can they string some wins together in the hopes of vying for the 'Cup of Life'?

Memphis need to start to turn things around - they need to find their Graceland so to speak. Their Happy Place. They continue to find the post as Chriss leads the league for dunks with 63. As a squad they rank 2nd for stealing averages per game with 10.8. But the real issues lie in their offensive efficiency as they lay 2nd last in the league at 99.25. Which has seen them 0-6 against .500 teams thus far. They really need to find their scoring edge if they are to turn things around, and start to add wins on their 7-11 record.

Brooklyn We Go Hard - The Nets are one tough outfit. Jordan has been raking in 14.5 boards a game (2nd in the league) and has 53 dunks at current to his name, while Bledsoe dishing out 9.8 dimes a game (3rd in the NLL) and 2.31 steals a game (3rd in the NLL). The two have been amazing for the Nets. Not to be overshadowed has been DeMar DeRozan who has amassed an average of 26.9 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 3.0APG. All these stats point to a stellar start to the season and yet the Nets still find themselves 11th in the East with 7-10. With some key injuries at current, how can Brooklyn bounce back?

Indy are hurting. To make it tougher they are now without star big man Blake Griffin who saw them through some tough games and converted many into much needed wins. They see the return of Tony Parker, which should bring them stability at the point guard position. Harris will become the target man from now on one would imagine, while Adams and Morris will likely need to step up in the fray. This is when you get inventive and creative with your roster and while GM sheed has a task on his hand, it opens up doors and possibilities for change.

Resting down the bottom of the West are the Phoenix Suns. The Suns have been competitive, but just haven't had the finishing edge to close out games. To make matters worse they see Walker out. They will be looking for production from Clarkson, but need to see a consistent spread through the team. The 2 bigs at the back Gortat and Horford need to work their spacing better, and not only put up their double digit rebounds. While times are tough in Phoenix, they can be empowered in knowing that Bjelica and Hayward can step into a team that has competed hard against all opponents. I expect a turnaround for the Suns - once they see their full potential and full lineup.

Decimated by injuries the Clippers have struggled from week to week: Nikola Mirotic (Face), Tristan Thompson (Calf), DAngelo Russell (Knee), Rodney Hood (Ankle). The Clippers may continue to cellar-dwell. While Booker has provided a cheering points, without a steady and stable supporting cast the Clippers will struggle. The Clippers have been able to allow only 96.50 per game (4th best in the NLL), however they have the third worst point production rate of 98.63 per game. With a starting 5 of Teague/McCollum/Fournier/Love/Cousins that Wolves should see more wins than current. Currently sitting 13th in the West, the Minnesota Timberwolves can only get better. With win-able games coming up I expect this team to be further up the Rankings in the near future. McCollum and Cousins have both been able to post 20+ PPG for the Wolves and will need the likes of Love to join in on the act in order to turn things around as he only holds a 13.4 PPG average. The lacking production within the roster is a real issue for a team with much more to give.

Christmas in Washington sang Steve Earle - but currently the presents and chocolates have not fallen the way of the Wizards. No Curry, Johnson, Lin or Singler - all they are wanting for Christmas is their sturdy and steady rotation back. While the Wizards have been able to steam much of the storm with the help of Hield, Crawford, Lopez and Randle, they are missing the rotational support to back-up their production. Without clear star-power in the roster they have really struggled against the more highly rated teams. With Boston, Miami, New York, Cleveland and Charlotte on the cards - it seems like another tough week in Washington. Can the Christmas wishlists turn things around?

Will there be a rapture for the Raptors? Seemingly no this week. With fixtures against the Hornets, Spurs, Bucks and Cavs - it seems tough going. Beal has been explosive with 29.1 PPG, but at 4-12 they need players to step up and help especially considering they have relatively no injuries. The supporting cast in the starting five need to lend a helping hand across the board as Toronto stare down a tough trot. Drake has not shown at any games either which has left team morale at an all time low. How do things change in Toronto? Who will stand and be counted? When will Drake return?

The Pistons are really hoping for an NBA to NLL reflective production from Simmons and Oladipo. While the pair are 13 and 16 respectively for their NBA stats according to ESPN - they are 46 and 116 within their NLL contributions. If the Pistons can get those two firing the world is their oyster. Coupled with dominant and standout performances from their starting centre Nurkic (19.4PPG, 10.9 RPG) they could have the building blocks of a fear-inducing first 5. However at current they have struggled to string it all together. One interesting note for the Pistons is their latest acquisitions Jabari Parker and Jon Leuer and how he may fair within the organisation. For now they both sit on the IR, but could this be what they need to produce the needed season changing numbers.

Golden State will hope to work the wand of the Silverlining Playbook at the moment. With not much to chant about and not many evident pluses it seems like more hard going for the Warriors. One turning point could very well be the acquisition of Andre Iguodala, Theis, Connaughton and Carter into the team. The Warriors fans will be hoping this to be the case and things to click as they remains last for PPG and RPG. A catalyst for change or more woe? Whatever the case, a large positive being GM MaiLo1323's active attempts at turning the tide.
