Power Ranking - Very Good, Good, Bad and Ugly

Dec, 01 (Week 3) - It's the Very Good, Good, Bad and Ugly of the NLL season so far [dazman32]

Rank Rating Team Record Comment
1 (4) 99 Mil Milwaukee Bucks 11-1
Mil 145, Sac 93 W
Mil 119, SA 74 W

Den 100, Mil 115 W
Mil 123, LAL 69 W
Mia 74, Mil 129 W
Mil 137, Bkn 120 W
Very Good: 11-3, top of the East, the Bucks look dominant early and with 3 absolute superstars on their roster, nobody wants to play these guys. Good: Rebounding and three throws, both ranked number 1. This team is super athletic and it shows on the glass and teams have to foul them to slow them down. Bad: Injuries to wings. Antetokounmpo, LaVine, Miles and Shumpert are all ailing and have caused the Bucks to lose 2 games this week, but no team would be able to cover those names.

Sac 93, Bos 101 W
Very Good: Kevin Durant has been superb so far, currently second in the MVP race. KD has proved that wings are still relevant, averaging 31 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Good: Week 3 was kind to the Celtics, with KD back and dominating, the Celtics won all 4 games, propelling the team into the upper tier of the Eastern Conference standings. Bad: KD's health has been a real concern so far, only playing in half of the games so far. When he is out there, the Celtics can beat anyone, when he is not, they look very vulnerable.
  3 (3) 81 OKC Oklahoma City Thunder 9-3

Den 100, OKC 120 W
Mia 78, OKC 109 W
Very Good: Despite a new engine, that renowned OKC defense is back this season, currently ranked number 1, and again lead by Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler and Nikola Jokic. Good: The recruitment of Paul George looks a masterstroke, as he has fit in beautifully with this team, PG leads the team in per with 22.81 and has been shooting the ball so well. Bad: Jokic and Green have struggled a little on the glass so far, and Green has found himself in foul trouble during some games, likely due to his lack of height.
4 (7) 80 SA San Antonio Spurs 9-3

LAL 93, SA 101 W
Very Good: The two twin towers Davis and Embiid are running rough shot over the rest of the league, so far combining for 56 points, 22 rebounds and 4 blocks a game. Good: The Spurs have apparently been on autopilot to start the season, yet still sit second in the Western Conference, good luck to the rest of us when Leeroy kicks this team into gear. Bad: The point guards are having trouble staying healthy, with both Conley and Beverley now out. Ramon Session has had to step in, but will he be as effective getting the big men the ball?

Orl 85, Ind 108 L
Very Good: Free throws have been the ace up the sleeve of Javi so far, helping this Magic team defy all expectations, the team currently makes 25 a game good for number 1 in the league. Good: Jonas Valanciunas looks like a world beater, commanding this team from the paint, averaging 24 points, 11 rebounds and a block and a steal. Bad: Normally the southeast division is a pretty easy one to win, not this season however with Miami also defying expectations and giving the Magic a tough battle so far.

Very Good: GM Breece has compiled a bunch of outcasts and misfits into a roster that is playing such great team basketball. It is a pleasure to watch these guys, 2nd on offense, 1st for turnovers. Good: Three point shooting has also been a feature for this squad, finishing of those pretty plays as currently the second best shooting team, and second for three pointers made. Bad: As mentioned above, the Heat have a real dog fight on their hands in the southeast division with the Orlando Magic. Only one of these teams can emerge as the kings of Florida.

NY 117, Cle 86 L
Very Good: The Cleveland bench is feared throughout the NLL, currently 4th for bench points, and lead by serial gunners in Speights, Ross and Covington. With some crafty bigs in Bogut and Koufos. Good: Not having to rely on Lebron has been a welcome change so far. Yes, he is still a gun, but this season he is getting a heap of help from Drummond, Ibaka and co. Bad: Experimenting a little too much with the lineup has hurt the Cavs a little so far, Drummond at PF appears a failure, having cost the Cavs two wins in week 3.

Very Good: Steph Curry has somehow gone to another level this season, leading the league in points per game with 32.4 on an absurd 51%, 49%, 97% shooting. He is also 3rd in the MVP race. Good: With Klay Thompson on board and the ageless Dirk, the Bulls are still firmly the best three point shooting team in the league, and also the league's best offense. Bad: With no athleticism to speak of, this team ranks very poorly in rebounding and three throws, and has been destroyed by the athletic Bucks in 2 division games so far.

Very Good: GM favorite Carmello Anthony is still scoring in bunches, averaging 26 points per game, which is helping his team stay near the top of the Western Conference. Good: The Kings may have solved their center issues in the form of a glitchy 7-3 giant in Boban Marjanovic. As a starter, Boban averages 22 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Bad: An already great defensive team, may have gone too far with a recent trade, bringing in more defense at the expense of livewire guard Patty Mills. Let's hope the balance hasn't been put out.

Dal 102, Den 83 W
Very Good: The Dallas rebuild already appears over, with the Mavs hovering towards the top end of the Western Conference standings, despite the young age of many rotation players. Good: Lonzo Ball has started his rookie campaign well, taking out the week one rookie of the week award. His dad hasn't proved a distraction so far for himself or his teammates. Bad: Big time recruit Paul Millsap has had surgery on his wrist and will miss several months, a huge blow to the on-court veteran presence of this young team.

Very Good: Alex Len has come out of nowhere to be an unstoppable force in the paint. Len currently ranks 5th in the MVP race, and averages 27 points and almost 14 rebounds per game. Good: The Pels started the season really well, and looked a hugely competitive outfit that no-one really wanted to face. The main fear seeing their big men foul out early. Bad: Recently the Pels have fallen back to earth and are on a 3 game losing streak. Alex Len is being asked to do far too much, and the other guys are barely contributing at all.

Very Good: Rudy Gay is back and as good an NLL player as he has ever been. Currently ranked 10th in the MVP watch, Gay is causing matchup nightmares for the bigger, slower power forwards. Good: GM Toby has his team above .500 against all odds, which has to feel great for a rebuilding team without its first round pick this season. Keep it up young man. Bad: The Blazers have a tough decision on their hands about what to do with Rudy Gay. I'm sure trade options will be a plenty, but when do you pull the trigger and start likely losing games?

Very Good: The young guys are showing plenty, Porzingis is still a gun, Maker, Ingram and Murray are developing with more and more playing time and the Hornets are so well placed. Good: The Hornets are also winning games, and currently in the playoffs out in the difficult east. Despite the youth, they have shown an ability and willingness to win games. Bad: There are some very good teams currently below them in the standings. Some teams that never miss the playoffs, and you just know they will be hard to keep out for long.

Very Good: Dennis Smith Jr was taken earlier than expected, but boy does this look like a good move so far. Dennis looks an accomplished, athletic and driven young man, who should be great. Good: The Clippers have a lot of improvement left, yet are still in the top eight in the West so far. With Gordon, Capela, Booker and Hood improving each week, this team can go higher. Bad: DeAngelo Russell had also started so well, but has succumb to a knee injury, halting his good progress and momentum. The Clippers are also not above .500 right now.

Very Good: Irving and Harden were switched after a poor week 1, and this has turned around the Knicks fortunes, returning them to the team that fell agonizingly short in the finals last season. Good: Despite their toughest week's schedule so far, the Knicks are currently undefeated in week 4, with a huge matchup coming against the hot shooting Bulls. Bad: GM Dunadan is having trouble coming to grips with the intricacies of the new engine, and is seemingly getting distracted by its faults. Hopefully the GM can look past this and focus.

Good: The lottery picks Frank Ntilikina and Jayson Tatum have started the season really well, ranked 5th and 6th in the rookie rankings. The pair are combining well and helped the Grizz to a good start. Bad: The team has started to sputter, and are currently struggling through a 3 game losing streak. .500 looks a longer way off now for this young team unfortunately. Ugly: Dante Exum's injury plagued career so far, has been very disappointing. As an Aussie GM, Jessedunne probably desperately wants this guy to succeed, but can anyone see it happening?

Good: Big Nikola Vucevic is having a career year, which must thrill GM Greenmig, as he needed someone to build a game plan around. Big Nik is averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Bad: Nik's foul trouble has been a concern, seeing him miss crucial moments during games. Nik's never been known for his defense, and is struggling against these glitchy bigs. Ugly: Rebounding is a big problem for this team, with the differential currently -5.1. Only one player is hitting double figures, with the other guys not providing much.

Good: The Sixers are still around the mark, despite star wing Kawhi Leonard's absence. Once healthy everyone expects this team to shoot up the standings in the East. Bad: Nobody knows when Kawhi will return. His injury is quite unusual with a return timetable up in their air. Coaching staff are also being tight lipped about it, pointing to an issue. Ugly: Rudy Gobert has joined Kawhi on the sidelines, putting a real strain on the Sixers already thin front court. Ed Davis was brought in, but is likely a stopgap until Rudy returns.

Good: New GM Bandrsn10 has been active and upbeat despite inheriting a pretty weak team. And he has them playing pretty competitive NLL ball at times. Bad: The Hawks defense has been pretty shoddy so far, with the team struggling to keep opponents out of the paint and off the glass. Darrell Arthur's addition should help this. Ugly: Number 1 pick Markelle Fultz is yet to debut, and his shoulder injury looks like nasty business. This is not what the Hawks needed, with Fultz representing the future of this franchise.

Good: Week 3 saw the Nets start to work things out, which was nice to see for a GM who works so damn hard for this league. Finally the Nets appeared to be turning the corner. Bad: Week 4 has been a step back again for this team, which must be frustrating. Blow outs losses to the Spurs, Thunder and the worst one, too a last placed Raptors must sting. Ugly: The Nets injury list is a who's who of great, but often broken down players. Parker, Gallinari and Nance Jr reside their now, Bledsoe has, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson soon could be.

Min 91, Utah 110 W
Good: A recent trade should hopefully improve the chemistry in Utah. Trevor Ariza and Patty Mills come in to give the offense a real shot in the arm, while keeping relevant on D. Bad: Both sides of the ball have been an issue for the Jazz, who really shouldn't be doing as bad as they are with that roster. Things need to be worked out soon, before it's too late. Ugly: Foul trouble has plagued the Jazz bigs, and the trio of Gasol, Aldridge and Cauley-Stein have struggled to be on the court for long stretches as a result.

Good: The Pacers are keeping it simple and taking care of the ball. A lot of iso and post play for the likes of Blake Griffin and Tobias Harris a large reason why. Bad: The Pacers aren't winning, this really isnt a shock to me after last season, but appears to be a surprise to GM Sheed. I foresee some big moves on the cards. Ugly: Blake Griffin has an MCL sprain and will now miss up to two months. This is a huge blow for an already struggling team, and will not help at all in the pursuit of more wins.

Good: Hassan Whiteside has been magnificent, carrying this team through a rough season so far. He is averaging 28 points, 14 rebounds and 11 FTA. A huge presence inside. Bad: Houston doesn't appear to have an identity. Outside of a dominant Whiteside, this team isn't in the top 10 for any category, apart from pace. They need to find something. Ugly: Whiteside has gone down, and will likely miss a couple of weeks. This is going to leave the Rockets without the reason they have won 6 games and makes it tough to stay in touch.

Good: Despite rumblings from outgoing GM Spudspace, DeMarcus Cousins is still dominating this league, averaging 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals. Bad: He has very little help, outside of CJ McCollum. Kevin Love is struggling, Jeff Teague has been horrible and the bench aren't giving much. Ugly: This team is now rudderless. I don't really know what happened to cause his exit, but the amount of jokes at the departing GM's expense tells me something went down.

Good: Ben Simmons is finally playing and looks like a once in a generation kind of talent so far. He has a tremendous blend of athleticism and skill and looks a hot chance for ROTY. Bad: The Pistons just aren't winning enough games, putting them in the lower tier of the Eastern Conference standings. Laddas says he's not surprised, but the rest of the league are. Ugly: The problem appears to be on offense, where the Pistons lack any strong shooters. Simmons can't shoot it yet, but he's not alone. They also turn it over far too much.

Good: The Suns are another team that excels on the glass and getting to the line, two things you would think really help you win ball games in this league. Bad: They aren't winning a whole lot, actually barely at all. None of this has translated into good play on either side of the ball, and despite the talent, the Suns are languishing. Ugly: An injured Hayward was brought in, but with the likes of Horford, Walker and Gortat, there is no excuse for the poor play so far. The Suns also don't have their 1st round pick.

Good: Buddy Hield is showing a lot of promise as the shooter and scorer to replace the departed Klay Thompson. Hield is 6th in three's made and averaging 17 points per game. Bad: Many people thought the Wizards might be more competitive than this with their good depth. Lopez has been great, but the team is having a lot of trouble scoring. Ugly: Shooting, offense, rebounding. Fundamental's to succeeding, and categories the Wizards rank last and second last in. They do have a lot of assets though, use them wisely at the right time Darko.

Good: The NBA Warriors are doing well? Not a lot to like about the NLL version though. Perhaps Frank the tank, who has been very solid in his 3rd NLL season, averaging 16 and 8. Bad: Nic Batums elbow has been problematic, keeping him out for all but one week so far. I almost traded for him in the off-season, choosing not too seems like a better move. Ugly: When Batum was healthy in week 3, the Dubs lost every game. In which Batum was a -7.3. This is a really bad sign that things may not turn around when he comes back again.

Good: I think they have finally worked it out. So far this week, the Nuggets are un-defeated. Perhaps the lead feat of Enes Kanter, and the ineffectiveness of Eric Gordon was holding them back? Bad: They are coming from a long way back. 5 wins in a row still see's this team 2 games below .500. Many more wins will be required to get them back into the playoff mix out West. Ugly: John Wall's three point shooting has been horrid to start the season. 19 attempts at 16% likely goes against everything GM Rootsey wants from his lightning quick, star point guard.

Good: In pre-season, this team looked very competitive, and appeared to have a roster ready to take on the best teams the Eastern Conference had to offer. Bad: They have been terrible, 4 wins so far, and anchored to the bottom of the East. Very little has gone to play for the team north of the border so far. Ugly: Those jersey numbers. I'm sorry, but this has been a real annoyance for me for years now. Please for the love of Jessica Alba, change some of those 99's.
