+ Über-talented forward who tends to drift in and out of the offense
+ Played extended minutes as a rookie but did not rate well by advanced metrics
+ Shined in the playoffs as a stretch four. Possible future position?
It's easy to fall in love with Barnes when you watch him play. Between his solid frame, his occasionally breathtaking athleticism and his ability to shoot the basketball, Barnes has all the tools -- plus basketball IQ. There's no question why Barnes was considered the nation's best prospect entering North Carolina, or a surefire top-10 pick even after two underwhelming college campaigns. At times during his rookie season, Barnes made good on that potential. All too often, however, his box score is conspicuously empty outside of the scoring column.
A starter from day one, Barnes never looked out of place or overmatched as a rookie. At the same time, the starting role was problematic because it allowed Barnes to drift to the perimeter and become a bystander on offense for extended periods, interrupted by highlight-reel dunks.
Coming off the bench might be ideal for Barnes, who will be a go-to scorer for the Bulls' second unit and must also remember to pay attention to the glass.
