NLL Insider - Team by Team: Cleveland Cavaliers

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

The almighty 3 times champs Cavs were expected to win it all again. Part of it because they were able to keep the King LeBron James another year.  They were able once again to contend in the East side but weren’t able to have the same crazy winning streak they had last season. Injuries stroke hard this year, with Ibaka, Parker and others missing long part of the season. Sign of aging yes but Cavs will remain on top of the conference for few more years if they keep this squad.

SEASON LOWLIGHTS

Losing the first position in the East to the Sixers came out with a big price to the Cavs. They ended up playing against the big surprise of the East the Hawks. Cavs won the two first home games and many thought they would win it all but with some changes the big bird turned it around winning the following 4 games sending Cavs to holidays early for the first time in four years.

BEST TRADE

Cavs don’t trade much but at least they do good trades. This year it was boring as ever. The best trades were those they made for gm points, getting richer every single season for only a bunch of bench warmer or late picks. The top of all was 40 gm points for the 30th (CJ Wilcox) and 60th  (Louis Labeyrie) pick of last year draft. I guess all those gm points earned by OKC news ended up in alejandro’s pocket.

WORST TRADE

As we said before, not so many trades in Cleveland and most part of them are insignificant to change anything for the team. Maybe the worst one was that when Cavs sent Devin Harris and Pero Antic for only 12 points. Not these players have any impact on the team but if you compare to other trades you can start yourself if Cavs could receive more on this one.

OTHER NOTABLE TRADES

The most commented trade by the Cavs was when they sent away the dead body of Shannon Brown for the old veteran Elton Brand. The league was intrigued about this one while Cavs received a useful big man to come off the bench for pretty much nothing. Brand finished the season and his carrier with 5 points and 5 rebounds per game.

BEST FA SIGNING

Because of 2013-14 campaign Cavs had the advantage this year to pick anyone they wanted. This year they brought two good names on Chris Kaman and Rodney Stuckey, But Stuckey who had a better impact on the team playing great offensive in starting SG replacing the aging Caron Butler. Stuckey off the bench factor was another point he added to the team. He became the third best scorer even coming off the bench for most part of the season

WORST FA SIGNING

Richard Jefferson was signed to cover the SF spot to give LeBron James a rest. Sadly Jefferson’s terrible shooting ability limited him to play only 22 games this season. His numbers were not even a stretch of he was 5 years ago.

STAR

We could put the King LeBron James as the star of this team, but Tony Parker has a major impact in this team.  Parker played 70 games this season with 21 points and 4 assists. His ability to lead the team helped the Cavs to stay alive without LeBron and Ibaka. Sadly in this playoffs Cavs’ coach tried to play Stuckey over him on PG position and that might be the reason they lost the series against the Hawks

SURPRISE

Cavs is a consistent team and they don’t have much space for big surprises. Jodie Meeks was another player signed by the Cavs and played way better than last year. Playing the starting SG role he doubled his number from last year with the Knicks

GOAT

Caron Butler had his worst season in his carrier. Coming from a 21 points per game season to a only 5 points per game he was quickly placed on the bench and only started 4 games this season. He is a Free Agent this year and probably the 35 years old small forward will find another place to play this season

DRAFT REPORT CARD

Another year and another first pick sent to Cavs’ investor buddy Oklahoma City Thunder. Nikola Milutinov was drafted 29th and sent to the Thunder for maybe 30 plus gm points. Cavs also had two second round picks. Juan Pablo Vaulet an Argentinian SG, whose has a great basketball IQ but coming off from a 15 months ankle injury. The other one is Arturas Gudaitis a 6’10 power forward from Lithuania. We are not going to see any of this guys in action soon, or maybe never.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Cavs is aging and the super starting five had a big impact with Caron Butler decreasing performance. Next to find his way down is Tony Parker not only in points per game numbers but in games played. Injuries will be a plague for the Cavs in upcoming years. Cavs have to re-sign Stuckey and Kaman to secure some strength on the bench. Also they need to keep developing Terrence Ross on the wings. However the future of the Cavs lies on the development of their big man Andre Drummond. Drummonds is coming for his third year but still need to improve his offensive game if he wants to become the next Dwight Howard.

UPCOMING FREE AGENTS

With 99 gm points Cavs can keep anyone they want.

LeBron James, Rodney Stuckey, Tony Parker and Leandro Barbosa will stay with the Cavs even if they don’t spend any point on him. Chris Kaman is the only player with a small possibility to leave this year but gm alejandro might spend some points on him to keep his big man. Caron Butler, Richard Jefferson and Shawne Williams are unnecessary and might leave the team.
