NLL Insider - Team by Team: Milwaukee Bucks

by dazman32, updated on Sunday, October 26 2014, 09:47 pm EST

2013-2014 Finish: 39-43

Season Highlight

The start. Milwaukee started the season like a house on fire, winning 20 of their first 26 games. The players may come and go pretty quickly in Milwaukee, but the Bucks are always built to be young, long and athletic. With last season’s engine suiting them to perfection, Russel Westbrook and Jrue Holiday were the most dominant backcourt in the NLL, and the Bucks athletic forwards cleaned up on the glass and finished on the break.

Season Lowlight

The end. With Westbrook and Holiday both succumbing to serious injuries, the Bucks season went into free fall, only winning another 19 games from the remaining 56. Westbrook would return late in the season, but the Bucks could not recapture their early season form, limping into 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, that meant a first round date with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a playoffs exit after just 4 games.

Best Trade

The Milwaukee Bucks send Thomas Robinson to the Houston Rockets.
The Houston Rockets send a 1st-Rounder (NO) to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Usually a man of many deals, Badwolf was a little quieter on the trade front this season. This was probably the best of the bunch based on the comments. T-Rob really hasn’t found his NBA niche yet, and the pick became Doug McDermott, who has looked like a promising shooter at the wing position in preseason.

Worst Trade

The Milwaukee Bucks send Al-Farouq Aminu to the Chicago Bulls.
The Chicago Bulls send a 2nd-Rounder (Bos) to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Chicago Bulls trade -6 GM points. The Milwaukee Bucks receive 6 GM points.

The first deal of the season for Milwaukee, this one didn’t work out so well, with Aminu starting every game in Chicago, the Celtics pick which had been touted as basically a first rounder, eventually became pick 52.

Other Notable Trades

The Washington Wizards send a 2nd-Rounder (Was) to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Milwaukee Bucks trade -10 GM points. The Washington Wizards receive 10 GM points.

An early second rounder for 10 GM points was a pretty good deal for the Bucks.

The Detroit Pistons send a 1st-Rounder (LAC) to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Milwaukee Bucks send a 2nd-Rounder (Mem) and 2nd-Rounder (Was) to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send a 1st-Rounder (SA) to the Detroit Pistons.

The Detroit Pistons receive 38 GM points. The Milwaukee Bucks trade -38 GM points.

Always going after 1st round picks, here Badwolf gets one for two second rounders.

The Milwaukee Bucks send Courtney Lee to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Milwaukee Bucks send a 1st-Rounder (Mil) to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Minnesota Timberwolves send a 1st-Rounder (Orl) to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Also always trying to move up in the draft, Badwolf traded Courtney Lee and his own pick, for the pick of Orlando, who I believe became Zach Lavine.

Best FA Signing

Seth Curry- Comes from a great family, probably introduced Badwolf to his brother.

Worst FA Signing

Stephen Jackson- Jackson lasted a whole 13 days in Milwaukee, enough said.

Star

Russell Westbrook- Even though he only managed 45 games, Westbrook is definitely the Star in Milwaukee. The ultra athletic guard plays both the 1 and 2 at times, but wherever he plays he dominates. Last season was no exception, averaging 27 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds per game.

Surprise

Jrue Holiday- The Bucks were almost unbeatable when this guy was healthy. Holiday played more point guard last season, tripling his assist numbers while scoring at a higher rate. The backcourt duo surprised the league and took it by storm, before injury broke it up. Holiday averaged 17 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds.

Goat

Bucks medical staff- The Bucks medical staff had one job and one job only, keep the electrifying backcourt healthy, they failed and so did the Bucks season because of it.

Draft Report Card

Doug McDermott- A sharpshooting wing out of Creighton, McDermott has the size and stroke to contribute right away, but rumour has it he might already be out the door.

Zach Lavine- A big, athletic point guard, Badwolf is probably hoping he has the next Carter-Williams on his hands.

Jusuf Nurkic- The big Croatian center enters the league as a good rebounder and creative in the post. Will be interesting to see how he handles the American game.

Nemanja Dangubic- An athletic shooting guard out of Serbia, Dangubic will remain in Europe for awhile, but may come over when ready.

 Looking to the Future

The Bucks remain as young, long and athletic as always, but will the new engine suit them as much as the old did. Either way, if the backcourt of Westbrook and Holiday is healthy, expect the Bucks to be around the playoffs as they always are, but until Badwolf can get over his 1st round pick obsession, I don’t think this team will ever be given enough time to grow into a contender.

Upcoming Free Agents

DeMarcus Cousins- A restricted free agent, Cousins is the big man in the middle for Milwaukee, and won’t be going anywhere.
