NLL Insider - Team by Team: Dallas Mavericks

by badwolf, updated on Monday, October 06 2014, 08:18 pm EST

2013-14 Finish: 55-27

Season Highlight

Dallas made their 4th playoffs in a row (they only missed the postseason once). Mavs are one of the elite teams in the West and Melo is one of the true superstars, a former MVP, a player that can lead the team to greatness. Without him they're still strong, but  not a contender anymore. The team was close to the top of the West from beginning, but the competition got steadily stronger, and a better result (55 wins) then last year (52 wins) meant they lost the home court advantage.

Season Lowlight

Carmelo had to sit out the playoffs with a nagging injury at the wrong time. Dallas was no match for the surging Lakers. Greenmig's squad got the brooms out and no game was really close.

Best Trade

The Dallas Mavericks send John Lucas, Al Horford, Tyler Hansbrough and Henry Sims to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Oklahoma City Thunder send Will Bynum, DeAndre Jordan, Jeremy Evans and Sergey Karasev to the Dallas Mavericks.

Al Horford was injured yet again and Jordan is younger and probably better.  Jordan  was fantastic for the Mavs, going for 10 and 10 with 63% shooting (or dunking) in only 28 minutes with elite defense. Al, well, there's always next year.

Worst Trade

Smokey made a lot of trades, but it's hard to pinpoint a bad trade in there. Shengalia for 5 GM points? A gamble of no consequences with 99 GM points before the offseason starts.

Other Notable Trades

Motiejunas for Karasev. Donatas was great of the bench while Karasev cooled in the D-League.

Matthews and first for Duncan. Probably solid deal all around. No earth shattering player there around 20. timmy beat father time for one more season (make it two in NLL time), going for 13 and 10 in 28 minutes.

Hill, Dudley, Mahinmi for Felton, Hawes. Hawes was as good as gone at the end of the season and Felton got fatter everyday. Hard to judge this deal with all the players having issues (injury, obesity, free agency, decline).

35 points for Mitchell. Mitchell got overdrafted by Sheed (and might be released soon) but Plumlee and Dieng were still on the board. dallas obviously needed the points or just didn't like anyone there.

Anderson for Brooks. Ok.

Best FA Signing

Chauncey Billups was the only notable free agent that signed with the Mavs. He was fantastic, shooting 50+ from three. A bargain at his price. if only he's lasted longer.

Worst FA Signing

Chauncey Billups signed with Mavs for part of their MLE. He was solid while he lasted, but father time claimed him. Maybe that money could be spent wiser.

Star

Carmelo Anthony is obviously the top dog on this Mavericks team.  34 points on 61% shooting, 48% from three  and crazy 98% from free throw line. throw in 9 rebounds and 3 assists with a block and a steal and you've got yourself an MVP. or not, there were stronger cases for KD (38 points per game) and Lebron (77-5!). Melo already has his MVP award in the closet and would prefer the Larry O'Brien.

Surprise

Role players. All the guys on the team, from Green to Dudley played really really well in their minutes. Dudley, 53% from three, Anderson, 18% from three in Washington, 31 in Brooklyn, 47 in Dallas, green 46 from three, Motiejunas 50%, Billups 54%. Dallas had the best three point shooting role players league wide, which proved to be a big weapon in last season

Goat

Everybody played well. If we'd have to pinpoint someone it has to be George Hill. Hill was a part of the PG curse, a league wide occurrence. Still, he was the only Dallas player shooting badly - 38/31%. the real goat though, none other than Melo. How can you leave your team down like that? Just when you could reach for the stars. And then lose to the upstart Lakers?

Draft Report Card

Dallas skipped the draft. They packaged their first rounder (21) with Wesley Matthews in Duncan deal and then traded for more picks and traded them all away in various deals. Bruno Caboclo was taken with their first rounder (with some interesting players still on board). Mavs probably won't regret trading away a shot in the dark for a glimmer of hope.

there is a rookie though. Nikola Mirotic is finally coming over. A true stretch PF in the mold of Donatas, only better, supposedly.

Looking to the Future

Mavs have a rather old roster by the NLL standards. Thre was quite a lot of movement last year, rather uncharacteristically, only Melo and Green stayed from previous year. Injuries might have forced Smokey's hand a bit. Dallas will remain a top team in the West as long as there's Melo to build around, 30+ scorers don't come easy in NLL. Solid frontcourt, great defense, rebounding and scoring from Tim, DeAndre and newbie Mirotic, solid supporting cast. There's a hole at PG, Felton, Brooks and now Hill and Cole are ok players, but maybe this is a place for improvement in the preseason, either through free agency (99 GM points to throw around with 55 wins) or through trades. We'll see Dallas close to the top of the West yet again, barring injuries.

Upcoming Free Agents

Carmelo Anthony - A loyalty, winning team, 40+ minutes, a few GM points thrown his way just in case. Yeah, Melo is not going anywhere.

Robbie Hummels - Played a lot for Mavs last season. Will probably linger around and might see significant minutes with lack of depth.

Alan Anderson -  Played a lot for Mavs last season. Will probably linger around and might see significant minutes with lack of depth.

Chauncey Billups - it's surely the end of the road for a NLL great
