NLL Insider - Team by Team: Chicago Bulls

2012-2013 Finish:  30-52

Season Highlights- The Never Ending Rebuilding Tour continues for GM Dazman and his Chicago Bulls. After finishing dead last in the 2011/12 season, some of the potential-laden parts came to life, pushing the Bulls from a 13-53 record to a 30-52 finish this time around. That is more than double the wins from the season before, a sign that something is going right in Chi-town.

Season Lowlights – The Bulls still sucked. Does anyone want to guess how long it has been since Chicago has tasted the playoffs? It’s actually only been five years, but in NLL terms, it has been an absolute lifetime. The stance on getting draft picks and young players may have thawed though with Dazman’s most recent moves.

Best Trade
The Chicago Bulls send Mike Dunleavy to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers send a 2nd-Rounder (Phi) to the Chicago Bulls.
The Philadelphia 76ers use their trade exception over $ 3,750,000.
The Chicago Bulls receive 16 GM points. The Philadelphia 76ers trade -16 GM points.

The Bulls didn’t make too many excellent trades this season, so this minor one will have to suffice. With the team going nowhere and Dunleavy likely a free agency goner, they were able to flip him into some GM points and a 2nd round. And since we all value SOMETHING, ANYTHING in this league over a departing player, Daz’s haul turned out to be pretty decent here.

Worst Trade -
The Boston Celtics send Andrea Bargnani to the Chicago Bulls.
The Boston Celtics send a 2nd-Rounder (Bos) to the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bulls send a 1st-Rounder (Chi) to the Boston Celtics.

And it comes to this. After years of hording and seeking first rounders, the Bulls trade their first round pick for Andrea Bargnani?! Sure, they end with NBA first rounder Anthony Bennett, but Bargnani has played in what? 12 games total in the past three years. He also has multiple years on his deal, making a re-trade unlikely. If he finally gets healthy and lives up to his promise this season, then this trade might look better, but this is Bargs we’re talking about.

Other Notable TradesThe Charlotte Bobcats send Anthony Bennett to the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bulls send Kemba Walker to the Charlotte Bobcats.

This is an interesting deal, but are the Bulls still trying to tank? They trade their best player away for an undersized center. Not as horrible as the Bargnani deal, but still confusing, especially since Dazman’s earlier actions made it look like he was planning on winning now and not continuing the Never Ending Rebuilding Tour.

Best FA Signing – The Bulls signed no free agents this past season.

Worst FA Signing- The Bulls signed no free agents this past season.

Star- Kemba Walker- In his sophomore season Walker really began to come into his own. He scored nearly 15ppg and dished out 4.4 assists. He seemed poised to become the Bulls’ next star. That is until Dazman moved him to the Bobcats.

Surprise  Roy Hibbert- Hibbert surprised many by living up to his big extension. Unlike other big men who seem to simply fade away once they get the big bucks, Hibbert was one of the few bright spots in another disappointing season for the Bulls.

GoatCorey Maggette: Are surprised? He suited up for 14 games and shot a lovely 36%.

Draft Report Card

The Bulls ended up with more promising players in Anthony Bennett and Michael Carter-Williams. Both of these guys have the potential for stardom, but like all players in this past draft, where they actually will end up remains to be seen.

Looking to the Future – It’s more of the same for Bulls fans. More young guys with loads of potential, but a team that is unlikely to contend. Not unless Dazman decides to splash out and make some trades in the coming year. Hibbert and Bargnani end up a lot of the cap. At least Bargnani has a chance to do better than Darrel Arthur did. It appears Dazman finally gave up on him.

Upcoming Free Agents

Corey Maggette- Will anyone sign this guy this offseason?

Zaza Pachulia and Mickael Pietrus- These guys have either turned 30 or are close to it. The Bulls don’t like players over 25.
