NLL Insider - Team by Team: San Antonio Spurs

by pennywise , updated on Sunday, August 18 2013, 11:51 pm EST

2012-2013 Record : 39-43

Season Highlight:

Anthony Davis winning the Rookie of the Year award.  Let’s face it, the team was below .500 and came extremely close to making the playoffs, but when you become a lottery team, the highlights tend to be the individual accolades your players get.

Season Lowlight:

April 14th, 2013.  The day the Spurs lost Anthony Davis for the remainder of the 2012/13 season.  With only 1 week remaining in the season and fighting for a chance to make the playoffs, AD sprained his MCL and the team shut him down for the rest of the season.  The Spurs went 1-3 in that last week and missed the playoffs.

Best Trade:

The Dallas Mavericks send Joel Przybilla and O.J. Mayo to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Dallas Mavericks send Brandon Bass to the San Antonio Spurs. The Philadelphia 76ers send Shane Battier, Rajon Rondo, Marcus Thornton and A.J. Price to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Al Horford, Elliot Williams and Josh Selby to the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs send Kyle Lowry and Nicolas Batum to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia 76ers send a 1st-Rounder (NJ) to the San Antonio Spurs.

Yes, the Spurs moved Horford, Lowry and Batum, but they got back Battier(later moved for Allen), Rondo(turned him into Deron), Thornton(led team in scoring), AJ Price and a 1st rounder.  Horford has been underachieving, Lowry can’t seem to keep a starting job anywhere and there are mixed reviews in the NLL about Batum, but let’s just say he doesn’t score in the NLL like he should.

Worst Trade:

The Minnesota Timberwolves send Raymond Felton and Lance Thomas to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Bismack Biyombo and John Jenkins to the Minnesota Timberwolves.  The Minnesota Timberwolves receive 6 GM points. The San Antonio Spurs trade -6 GM points.

This was strictly a need based trade, as Rondo was out for the season and SA desperately needed a PG.  However, it’s unlikely that Felton will still be a Spur and Thomas was a throw away in a later deal.  Jenkins was no major piece, but Biyombo seems to have potential.  The best part of this being the worst deal is that SA traded from an area of strength in PF/C to fix a weakness in PG.  If that’s the worst trade, I’m sure it’s one that many owners would do faced with a chance to make the playoffs.

Other Notable Trades:

The Washington Wizards send Reggie Williams to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs use their trade exception over $ 2,500,000. The San Antonio Spurs trade -7 GM points. The Washington Wizards receive 7 GM points.

The San Antonio Spurs send JJ Redick and Jose Barea to the Washington Wizards. The Washington Wizards send Tayshaun Prince and Mario Chalmers to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send a 1st-Rounder (NJ) and 2nd-Rounder (SA) to the Washington Wizards.

The Phoenix Suns send JJ Redick to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Patrick Patterson to the Phoenix Suns.

The San Antonio Spurs send Gary Neal to the Sacramento Kings. The Sacramento Kings send Anthony Morrow to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers send Luc Mbah a Moute to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Anthony Morrow to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The LA Clippers send Tony Allen to the San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs send Shane Battier to the LA Clippers.

All of the above trades were made with a particular thought process towards building a team for the future.  SA seems to value high intensity defensive players and/or great wing scorers.  GM Leeroy definitely is looking to improve his team and make SA a force out West ASAP!

Best FA Signing:

Gary Neal -  Not sure if he really counts, as he was tendered a Qualifying Offer, but he was the only quality FA signing for the Spurs.

Worst FA Signing:

Raja Bell - The man never suited up for the Spurs last year.  Fortunately, he only cost SA about $1.8 million and was quickly released.

Star:

Marcus Thornton – Marcus was the offensive spark plug for the Spurs.  He led the team in scoring, 3pt attempts and FG attempts.  He averaged almost 20 a game, after only mustering 10 per for the Sixers for the 1st 12 games of the season.  He’s a slasher and a 3 point shooter, but his mid-range game needs work.

Surprise:

Anthony Davis – Everyone knew he was gonna be good, but I don’t think anyone expected that Davis would create the team chemistry that saw the Spurs almost make the playoffs.  If Davis wouldn’t have gotten hurt towards the end of the season, it’s highly likely that SA would have been the 8th seed out West.

Goat:

Reggie Evans - A hustle player that wasn’t contributing, Reggie had a hugely disappointing season.  Only putting up 2.2 points per game and shoddy 3.7 rebounds per.  I can easily see past the PPG, but Evans is there solely for rebounds and defense.  He wasn’t special at either last season.

Draft Report Card:  B

Tony Snell: Scouts have been comparing Tony to Kawhi Leonard all off season.  Now all he has to do is prove it!  He looked good in SL, scoring 11+ per game, but Snell is expected to be a defensive specialist early on.

Colton Iverson: Any time you can add something you can’t teach, like height, you gotta go get it.  Iverson is a 7 footer that won’t play this year, but SA hopes he will suit up in 2014/15.

Looking to the Future:

Anthony Davis will eventually be the face of the franchise.  Pairing him up with Pekovic over the next 2-3 years would give the Spurs a talented back court.  Adding more scoring on the perimeter in the likes of Deron Williams is also going to go a long way for SA.  Most of the Spurs core is under contract for 2more years, so this looks to be the start of something special for Leeroy and company.  Expect to see the Spurs fighting for perennial playoff spots for at least 3-4 years, barring injuries.

Upcoming Free Agents:

Tony Allen: Tony will be commanding a 4 year, $5M per contract, so it’s unclear if SA will be looking to retain his services.  Rumors are that Leeroy is considering a sign and trade with Allen, but this has not been confirmed.

Raymond Felton: Felton is a solid PG, but with Leeroy trading for Deron Williams, who knows if he would be willing to pay a backup PG over $4 Mil a year.

Shelvin Mack:  Mack is an affordable player that could be picked up to fill a roster spot.

Nikola Pekovic: Pekovic is a player that SA would love to retain.  He was tendered a QO, so it is expected that he will return to the Spurs.

AJ Price:  Career backup PG that played well for the Spurs in spurts last year.

Reggie Williams:  Wing scorer that doesn’t cost much, on a team that needs more wing scoring.
