Team by Team: San Antonio Spurs
2010-2011 Finish: 35-47
What went bad
Boyd sounded his trumpet and declared the Spurs the best team in the league. And they appeared to look that way. But it was all a dream and the Spurs and GM Leeroy sunks to new lows. Surprised? So were we!
Where exactly did the Spurs go wrong? A year ago a deal like
Tiago Splitter and
Ed Davis to the Sacramento Kings for
Luke Walton and
O.J. Mayo looked like a no-brainer. Now it's just a bad deal. At least they flipped Walton a few weeks later in a deal that git them Corey Maggette and Rasual Butler.
That's the Spurs 2010-11 season in a nutshell. One trade after another, trying to perfect the chemistry yet unwilling to accept defeat. Ever since Leeroy shipped off Tim Duncan, the team has been lifeless, not really committed to rebuild but also not really interested in winning. They were lucky to send off Greg Oden in a deal with Phoenix that netted them
Al Horford but then Horford was sent off the Milwaukee for Andrew Bogut.
What went worse
The Spurs disappointed again. GM Leeroy mulled retirement. There was no cheer in Texas (well, not this part of it).
Looking to the future
Although the Spurs' offseason moves will be chronicled in next year's Team by Team, Leeroy made the right move by deciding to completely rebuild. As for 2011-12, will the Spurs find the right pieces to help them in that process? Will Leeroy be tempted by a big trade and dash his rebuilding plans? We will have to wait and see.
