NLL Insider - Team by Team: Detroit Pistons

Team by Team: Detroit Pistons
2010-2011 Finish: 40-42

What went bad

2010-2011 will be remembered as the first season the Detroit Pistons were without long time GM Dert. Lured by the good weather and the glitz of Hollywood, Dert left his fans, but somehow this team not only did better this year without him than the season before, but they also bested his new Clippers in the record department. Doesn't matter. Neither team made the playoffs.

With no GM willing to fill in his shoes, the Pistons basically ran on autopilot all season. Shelden Williams left for Denver and despite bidding on many free agents, the Pistons only convinced DJ Mbenga and John Lucas to come to Motown. Is it the chilly winters and bad rep that kept the marquee names away? A good deal had to do with the bad financial state Dert the team in. The Pistons simply couldn't afford anyone good.

What went worse

Despite a big push at the end of the season, the Pistons barely missed out on the playoffs. It's back to the drawing board. The team is definitely not bad. They just need a GM.

Stars

- Zach Randolph, FC -

Z-Bo is now the face of the Detroit Pistons. He played out of position the entire season but will likely be rewarded with a contract extension for all his hard work. He is only 29 years old, still at the height of his career and his history of injuries appear to be behind him. When we think of the Pistons, we think of Zach Randolph.

- Mike Conley,  PG -

Also likely to re-up with the team is Mike Conley. Though Aaron Brooks may have threatened at first for the job, Conley emerged as the tried and true starter at the one for this club. And it looks like the Pistons are about to lock him up for a long time.

Looking to the future

The Pistons enter the new season with some cash. I say some because Randolph and Conley need to get paid. A bigger problem lies in the futures of Wilson Chandler and Aaron Brooks. While the lockout loomed, they both skipped to China. Now they are stuck and the Pistons are without their starting shooting guard and backup point guard. Another problem is Boris Diaw, he picked up the option on his huge contract. The Pistons have multiple guys at some positions, something a new GM could solve.

With those guys gone, the Pistons need to sign a backup PG and a true center. They have a pretty decent bench with Tyler Hansbrough, Tony Allen and Brandon Rush. They can probably afford to let Josh McRoberts walk, but they need to get a large body down in the paint and a smaller one to dish out the ball. Most of all, they need a starting SG.

The draft may have helped. Center Nikola Vucevic may be exactly what the Pistons need. They selected him at the 14th pick. He is a good scorer with a great basketball IQ. Expect him to make an instant impact. The grabbed Josh Harrellson in the second round, but with the number of power forwards on the squad, it is unlikely he will make the team.
