What went bad

Someone. Will. Soon. Say. Indiana!

It’s sad that with all the muddled one-liners and 82 basketball games played, the Pacers and GM Sheed will only be remembered for the above sentence this past season. It was another season of ineptitude in Indiana, the sixth in a row where the team finished outside the playoff bubble. If you’re looking for some of the worst basketball in the league, most will guide you to Indiana (or Portland for that matter).

Once the Gilbert Arenas-Blake Griffin deal settled, it looked like no one got the better end of the deal. Griffin missed the entire season due to injury for the Pacers and Agent Zero? Well, he got a little trigger happy. The offseason was a player carousel. Guys like Marcin Gortat and Brian Skinner took off. Free agents Carlos Delfino, Mikki Moore and Joey Graham came for the paycheck. The Knicks even convinced Sheed to take Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler and James Jones. Call it the clash of the wounded titans.

The rest of the season was filled with more roster moves and bad basketball. The deals were unimportant (Ronny Turiaf for Kwame Brown, CJ Miles for Kris Humphries) and as the Pacers lost, attendance shrank. As a gimmick to lure in fans, Sheed took a second job as stand-up comedian. Too bad no one laughed.

What went worse

See above.

Goats

- The Pacers –

One shy of 30 wins. Not good, folks.

Looking to the future

The Pacers ended the season with one brilliant deal and one ridiculous trade. First, he moved some picks to Milwaukee for Eric Gordon and Nick Young. Wow! That brings some legitimacy to Indiana. Then, Sheed moved starting point guard Beno Udrih for the injury-riddled center Joel Pryzbilla. Worst trade ever? It’s even worse when you’re relying on D.J. Augustin to run the ship now.

Going into the next season, the Pacers have the beginning pieces of what could be their best squad in years. If Gordon and Brand can stay healthy, they are definite ballers. If Griffin can stay healthy, he could be Rookie of the Year. If Corey Maggette can stay healthy, Sheed could actually trade him. And what about Rasual Butler? That dude needs some more love!
