NLL Insider - Team by Team: Miami Heat

Team by Team: Miami Heat
2009-2010 Finish: 28-54

What went bad

GM Tmac’s second season with the Heat proved his first one had been a fluke. Despite a playoff push in his rookie year, the Heat slipped back into its nearly annual position of being a league cellar-dweller. Coming into the 2009-10 season, GM Tmac didn’t want to rectify that position. In fact, he had one goal in mind: John Wall or so it seemed.

However, the Heat didn’t kick off the season hoping to fail, based on the flurry of moves Tmac made in the offseason, essentially flipping his entire roster Boyd-style. Gone were John Salmons, David West, D.J. White, Jodie Meeks and Baron Davis. In came Roger Mason, Al Thornton, Mickael Pietrus, Kendrick Perkins, Jordan Hill and point guard extraordinaire Steve Nash. Adding to the facelift was the $7 million Tmac spent on center Channing Frye (and he later waived him).

The rest of the season was spent doing two things: making moves and losing. Nash didn’t last long, sent to the Boston winter for Jason Richardson and a first rounder. Useless free agents like Chris Wilcox, Allen Iverson and Mikes Wilks were signed and then traded or released. Beyond that, the only thing happening in Miami was a bunch of losing.

Oh yeah, rookie Stephen Curry looked good.

What went worse

Another woeful season for Heat fans as the Heat finished dead last in the East. At least they weren’t the Trailblazers……or too bad they didn’t do AS badly.

Stars

- Stephen Curry, G -

The one bright spot of this horrendous season is rookie Curry. Scoring 14ppg and dishing out 4.1apg, Curry made a good case for Nash to be sent away. Although he still has a long way to go before he is an elite floor general, Curry’s performance is a positive indicator that Heat can only go up from the basement.

Looking to the future

Once the season ended, Tmac just started dealing again, probably bummed out he wouldn’t be bringing John Wall to Miami. He shipped out J-Rich and grabbed a heap of players in return from the Bulls: T.J. Ford, Anthony Parker and the rights to Greivis Vasquez.

In the draft he grabbed Ohio State junior Evan Turner with the second pick overall. The shooting guard is known for his versatility and his offense. Although he isn’t much of a shooter, Tmac can add him to the Curry rebuilding project. However, there are rumors that the Heat are a little leery of Turner’s development over the summer and may want to move him.

Unless the Heat grab a star, the chances of them competing this season are slim. The team has a lot of great role players, but no one stellar. Of course, more trades will be coming, so what you see on the roster page now will be changed as soon as the season starts up again. And who knows, maybe Tmac and the Heat will surprise us all like they did during his first season as skipper.
