Utah Jazz Review

2007-2008
Finish: 41-41

What went…

The Utah Jazz have never made the NLL playoffs. Though things have improved under GM Proid, it is still easy to draw comparisons to Miami’s old GM Chewy. Big ideas and big plans never equal big production. Things just always seem to fall apart. The intention and passion is there, but fate has it out for the Jazz. At least that is what GM Proid would have you believe. He has tried so many combinations and variables that it is impossible to remember anyone on the Jazz. Unless it’s Brian Scalabrine.

However, the big news out of Utah is Proid was promoted to commissioner of the league. Whether or not that new status will give his team a boost, and affect his judgment, is yet to be seen. Once again, the NLL Inside presents a version of TRADE CRAZY!

Daequan Cook for Damon Stoudamire - The bonanza began right after the draft when the Jazz sent hot rookie Cook to the Sixers in a 4-way that netted him the troublesome Stoudamire. Cook underwhelmed in his rookie year, Stoudamire did even worse. The only difference? Cook has upside.

Sean Williams and Donyell Marshall for Marko Jaric and Jeff Green- Good deal here for the Jazz. They sent off busted Marshall and hot prospect Williams for the underrated, but overpaid Jaric (he can hold down 3 positions) and Green, who turned out to be the best player in this deal. Too bad they didn’t hold onto him for the season.

2nd-Rounder (Utah) for Shavlik Randolph – Why not just give away the pick next time?
Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Yakhouba Diawara and 1st-Rounder (Utah) for Predrag Stojakovic – Winners and losers on both sides. Miami dumps Peja’s massive salary on Utah, Utah gets rid of Reef. Peja can play, but he’s not really worth all that money, is he? Getting rid of the pick wasn’t the wisest move. As mentioned, Utah has never made the playoffs and that pick could’ve been valuable. Reef also retired recently and that could have helped alleviate Utah’s salary situation.

Kobe Bryant and Morris Almond for Richard Jefferson, Marcus Banks and Kevin Martin – The season has begun and the Jazz are dragging again. GM Proid knows that Kobe has to go. This is a great deal for him. He gets two quality players for one of the best. Unfortunately, Martin goes down for most of the season and Kobe leads the Nuggets deep into the postseason. Chewy’s luck, eh? But this deal will look good for the Jazz in the future.

Luke Walton and Damon Stoudamire for Brad Miller- The team is beginning to come together. Miller is a quality center and really ads to a lineup featuring Jefferson, Martin and Peja. Stoudamire is filler and Walton is severely overrated. Things are looking sunny in Utah after all!

Andre Miller for Jason Terry- Until this deal happens. Miller is all it takes to propel the Sixers while the Jazz get the shooting mania of Terry. This is the moment things fall apart for the season. Once the dust settles, Terry will be traded and the Jazz will be looking at another season without anything to show for it.

Jeff Green for Luis Scola – Interesting deal, though the jury is still out. Scola is good for now while Green is young and will take seasoning. Sixers get the edge by a hair, but Scola should be the starting PF this season for the Jazz. If they don’t trade him.
Jason Terry for Mike Conley – Proid hated Terry. Let’s hope Conley isn’t a bust.

Looking to the future

The Jazz are in better shape now than ever, but there are still some kinks to be worked out. They only have two open positions for RJ, Peja and K-Mart. Leaving one on the bench at the current contract rate is just ludicrous. Something will have to give. They are also taking a big risk with Conley as starting point guard. Jaric may be the better pick as the season kicks off.

Right now, depth is the team’s biggest problem. With so much money going to starters, they really need to get some reliable guys to come in off the bench. Scalabrine and Banks just won’t cut it. Trading one of the big three for some variety is really the best bet. The team also has no incoming rookies. It will take some intelligence to make sure this team is balanced before the season begins. Let’s hope Proid continues to point this team in the right direction.
