Miami Heat Review

2007-2008
Finish: 48-43

What went…
Let’s admit it, even though he was much loved in the NLL community, Chewy was not the greatest GM in the world. It seemed every year he made some big move that brought in a mega-star (Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett) and then surrounded him with bargain bin players. Obviously, this plan never worked out. The Heat usually made the playoffs and then blinked out. It’s no secret that Chewy didn’t want to be in Miami and his last gift to the city before departing was trading Garnett and Michael Finley to the Hornets for Andrew Bogut, Lamar Odom and some change. This may have been blind fortune because it gave the Heat what they always needed: depth.

Enter new GM Tmac13. He took Chewy’s blueprint and the team finished with its best ever NLL record. But in order to achieve that mark….Tmac13 had to be a little….trade crazy!!
Brendan Haywood for Luke Walton- Walton is one of those guys that is all potential, but does not have much to show for it. He is hurt often. In his first move, Tmac13 sent off Haywood (who would go on to have a strong season) for Walton. Walton did all right for Miami, but he’s still just potential. Haywood would make a fine starting center for any team (though he’s out now following surgery). Walton still has a lot to prove.

Ruben Patterson, Jake Voskuhl and 2nd-Rounder (Mia) for Antonio Daniels – Decent deal for Miami. Even though Daniels has a long contract that is expensive, the Heat didn’t give up much for him. Patterson didn’t play and Voskuhl is not worth much. Daniels is good off the bench and do some spot starting.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Jannero Pargo, Andrew Bogut and 1st Rounder for Hidayet Turkoglu, Drew Gooden, Bostjan Nachbar and Hilton Armstrong- This one is a little more difficult to judge. Getting rid of Abdur-Rahim was a boon until he retired and his salary came off the books. Bogut is bound to be one of the better centers in the game. Tmac13 said he never liked Gooden and Turkoglu, despite playing career ball, is looking to try the free agency water. That 1st rounder could be good too. In retrospect, the Heat probably should have kept Bogut and the pick, considering Mikki Moore is their starting center.

Lamar Odom and Coby Karl for Baron Davis, Mickael Gelabale and 2 2nd rounders- Davis blindsided the Heat by proclaiming he may leave soon. Odom wasn’t doing much, so if Davis does actually leave, this deal could seen as a good way to dump salary. Otherwise, they get to retain one of the best point guards in the game. Of course, another blockbuster involving Minnesota (don’t worry, his special edition will soon come!)
Jamaal Tinsley for John Salmons- What a steal! What was Boston thinking? They traded a dude having a career year that can play three positions….for Tinsley? This was a coup on the part of the Miami Gm. Bye-bye Jamaal.

Drew Gooden for Cuttino Mobley- Only time will tell how this deal will play out. Gooden wasn’t feeling it in Chicago and Mobley gets to escape the Hawks. He is an underrated player and could provide the Heat with a deadly weapon next season.

Looking to the future

The fate of the Heat is really up in the air right now. Key players Davis and Turkoglu could walk away, leaving the team high and dry. They do have enough money to net Carlos Boozer or Elton Brand, but what the team needs is depth right now, not star power. Beyond Salmons and Mobley, they really don’t have anyone who can truly round out a starting five. Daniels, Moore and Walton make a great second unit, but you don’t want to rely on them night after night. So picking up a superstar may be the wrong move. Grabbing two great players with the money may be the way to go. But, Davis may stay and that will paint an entirely different picture in Miami.

The arrival of Marc Gasol this year is a cause to celebrate. They also have J.J. Hickson incoming, but is barely ready for the NLL. D.J. White could be a sleeper (but he will be out for months now) and Sean Singletary will have to battle height issues to make an impact.
