NLL Insider - Week 2: POTW and ROTW Announced!

by Nenjabin, updated on Wednesday, December 07 2016, 05:28 pm EST

The votes are in and final, and here we announce the Players of the Week and Rookies of the Week for Week 2!

East – Rudy Gay

The East race was not nearly as tight this week sans KATs barring from nominations and Durant falling off the face of the earth, and Rudy Gay claimed the award with 60% of the 1st place votes from DeMarcus Cousins. The Heat awoke this week with their injured stars back and went 3-1 after being 0-5 after Week 1. Gay led the charge pouring in 38 points per game on 55% shooting and 90% from the line. He also added 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and only 1.5 turnovers. Now that’s a week out for the veteran small forward! The Heat will need more weeks of Rudy doing old school Rudy things to continue their climb up the standings. Congratulations Rudy Gay on POTW for Week 2!

West – Harrison Barnes

Out West, like last week, the race was a non-event yet again but this time in favour of Harrison Barnes whom was nearly the unanimous choice for the POTW ahead of Jimmy Butler. Last week there were questions why Harrison made the polling, so this week made damn sure he should be on the list and rightfully took the crown. The Warriors went 3-1 which helps, and Barnes led them with 29.5 points per game, adding 5.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 0.8 steals while shooting it 53% from the field, 56% from deep and 77% from the line. Don’t look now folks, but the Warriors are 5-3 and sitting 5th in the West! That’s a far cry from where the team was unceremoniously left a little over a year ago by GM WallRus. MaiLo has this team stocked with pieces and starting to make an impact. Congratulations Harrison Barnes on POTW for Week 2!

West Rookie – Georgios Papagiannis

With 66% of the first place votes this week, Big Papa claimed the ROTW honours in the West ahead of his teammate Marquese Chriss. The Grizzlies have been struggling thus far this season, which can be somewhat expected when your franchise player is ruled out for the season before you even kick off, but Georgios is starting to make his presence felt around the league with the ample opportunity he has been handed. In Week 2 he averaged 10.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks while turning the ball over only 0.5 times and shooting it 55% from the field and 80% from the line. The big boy can play! With the Grizz looking lottery bound already and the frontcourt depth being shallow at best, look for Papa to start the whole season, health pending, and be in the running for the rookie award come the end of the year. Congratulations Georgios Papagiannis on ROTW for Week 2!

East Rookie – Buddy Hield

In the East, the rookie race was tight this week with only 5 points separating 1st and 2nd, despite 60% of the 1st place votes going to the winner, Buddy Hield. Hield had a massive week for the Bulls averaging 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting it 52% from the field and 50% from deep. The Bulls would have to be happy with that from their main target from the last draft! The production unfortunately only resulted in a 2-2 week for the Bulls which has seen Buddy dropped not only from the starting line-up, but from the rotation entirely in Week 3 which seems to be a curious choice, but the Bulls have started out solidly enough to make calls like this on their rookie rather than throwing him into the fire every week, and he’s sure to hit the scorers sheet strongly more this season. Congratulations Buddy Hield on ROTW for Week 2!

Congratulations to the winners in Week 2, and may the odds be forever in your favour!
