NLL Insider - Team by Team: Utah Jazz

by leeroy, updated on Thursday, October 27 2016, 04:24 am EST

2015-16 Finish: 48-34

Season Highlight:

Utah made the playoffs for the 2nd straight year after not making it for the 3 years prior. Finishing as the #5 seed despite a rough injury run was a credit to the team that Merencio has put together in Salt Lake City.

Season Lowlight:

Injuries, Injuries and injuries, there didnt seem to be a point after all star that the Jazz could get fully fit. When they did it was all too late. Getting bundled out of the playoffs in 5 games to a red hot Thunder was a tough way to end the season.

Best Trade:

Mike Dunleavy
Brian Roberts
Isaiah Canaan
Lamar Patterson
Tarik Black
Willie Cauley-Stein
Jordan Mickey
Joseph Young
Marcus Thornton

Chris Andersen
Devin Harris
Timofey Mozgov
Markieff Morris
Tomas Satoransky
Jarnell Stokes

I am not going to put the whiole trade but the monster deal that took place gave the Jazz some good depth to enter the season with.

Worst Trade:

The Charlotte Hornets send Eric Gordon to the Utah Jazz. The Memphis Grizzlies send Jonas Jerebko to the Charlotte Hornets. The Utah Jazz send Tarik Black to the Boston Celtics. The Utah Jazz send Mike Dunleavyand Gerald Henderson to the Charlotte Hornets.

There were no real howlers for the team, if forced to choose one then the fact that Gordon only managed just 12 games for the team, when he was going to be the final piece really hurt the teams momentum.

Other Notable Trades:

The LA Lakers send Gerald Henderson to the Utah Jazz. The Utah Jazz send Mike Scott to the LA Lakers.
The LA Lakers send a 2nd-Rounder (LAL) and 2nd-Rounder (LAL) to the Utah Jazz.

The LA Lakers receive 28 GM points. The Utah Jazz trade -28 GM points.

Henderson cost a pretty pennt but he should have been able to help the Jazz off the bench.

Best FA Signing:

Keeping their lineup together was key and they really shelled out for Kenneth Farien and Markieff Morris. They kept both guys and Morris was traded 3 days later.

Worst FA Signing:

The team had no bad FA signings.

Star:

Derrick Rose managed 65 games for the season, his most since 2011. Rose puit up nearly 30ppg and helped keep the Jazz in a decent piosition all season. If Rose can stay on the court for 65-70 games again this season the Jazz will be very happy.

Surprise:

Andrew Wiggins declined a bit in his 2nd season as a pro. Averaging 16ppg isnt bad but we expected better and we are sure the Jazz did too. If wiggins can take a step this season then the west better watch out.

Goat:

Kenneth Faried’s star was loking so bright after his break out season in New York. Since joining the Jazz he has been solid but really hasnt been playing up to what his salary would suggest. The Jazz need him to become what they hoped he would.

Draft Report Card:

The Jazz had the 3rd pick in the Draft however it was traded to Portland

Upcoming Free Agents:

Eric Gordon the key to a trade last year now a free agent with bad loyalty. The points situation in Utah is solid so he might be back.

Brian Roberts is another journeymen and with a bad loyalty expect to see him in diferent colours next season.

Looking at the future

Utah are really starting to feel like a treadmill team. It is difficult to see where the improvement will comefrom to leap frog the top west teams and stay ahead of a couple of younger teams that are likely to improve. Derrick Rose is key if he is still a stud inm 2k16 and Wiggins can improve they will likely see playoffs for a 3rd straight year.
